PHI CHI EPSILON GOLF OUTING - 2020

PHI CHI EPSILON GOLF OUTING - 2020

Saturday, August 15th at Western Lakes in Pewaukee (1pm Shotgun Start):

http://www.westernlakes.com/

SO, YOU LAUGHED AT THE AXIOM

“OLD GUYS RULE”

In the 2020 Western Lakes Phi Chi Golf program that may be what happened!  To start the program off Tom Higgins (pcl 65) took a bold shot at the SIXTY FOOT PUTT, having it tapper off a short distance from the Hole.  It was close enough to bring out shouts of “go – go” from the men of Phi Chi as it rolled straight in line with the hole.  It was another year of a valiant effort without the desired result, but hats off to Higgins for the strong showing.

In the final team standing it was a bunch of my era Brothers that walked away with the championship.   Jim Alf, Dennis Barker, Neil Hansen and Mike LaSelva Took home the 99 Beer Steins for their effort.  Hat’s off to them!  Brother Ben Kiesow will be posting the “official” results over the weekend – a early report contained an error and will be corrected with Ben’s report.

All that noted it was a great day for golf with the Brothers of Phi Chi Epsilon., 48 men hit the course.  With the continued COVID curse still messing with our social life it was great to see and visit those that made it to the event.  If anyone took pictures of their group we would appreciate having it sent to Rick Cozatt (rcozatt@wi.rr.com) to add to the event file, please include names.

WHAT’S NEXT

The continued limit on group celebration as well as the cancellation of D-3 sports is putting a damper on planning activities.  We know one thing there won’t be much activity during the balance of 2020.  With that we are once again going to have the winter event in Ft Myers and spring event in Phoenix – we will at least continue planning efforts for future events.  So, let’s all pray for a solution to the problem – if anything will be going on, we will advise all through the B2B.

Brother Phi Chi's,

It was another fun event at Western Lakes this year.  We would like to thank Ben Kiesow for organizing the event and Greg Essig for putting together a great spread for us.  The food was great and the drinks were cold on a warm day!  A special thanks to Ken Johnson and the Alumni Association for supporting the golf outing.  Without these guys, this event would not be as successful and fun.

See below for the results of the golf outing this year, and we are looking forward to seeing you all again next year!

PHI CHI SPRING MEETING – Mar. 29th and 30, Phoenix, AZ

Vince Tranchita with the help of Jay Shack put together a great gathering for the Brothers with the March 29th - 30th gathering.  To be honest they set the stage with the ROMEO at the Talking Stick Casino on Feb. 9th.  Pictures of both the Florida and Phoenix events are on the Home Page of the web site and identifications completed.  Our thanks to Fred Ullrich for his pixilation perfection in Phoenix.

Following is Brother Tranchita’s summary of weekend: “Phi Chi golf outing in Arizona is in the books.  We started out at Carlos O'Brien’s Restaurant on Friday night on the patio. The weather was warm and comfortable conducive to handling a few margaritas. Everyone that came had a great time, and as expected, we all exchanged what we did after graduation and the many stories as a Phi Chi - very interesting to say the least.

Saturday morning started out at the putting green, and again a putt was made from 60 feet.  Yes 2nd years in a row!  This year we had prizes for a hole in-one on 4 separate par 3's.  With one giving away $15000.  No one got the hole in-one.  Maybe next year; but the fact remains that one day later, Jim and Don Beam went golfing at Coyote Lakes CC and guess what??  Jim got a hole in-one on the 12th hole 165 yd's out.  Go figure, one day late.  Sorry Jim. But a great feat non the less.

The golf event winners scored a 63 or 9 under par, Jim Beam, Don Beam and Jerry Callaway. Second place went to Jay Schack, Fred Ullrich and Gary Gamoll with a score of 67. The high light of the event after golf was our Raffle.  We gave away over $600 worth of cash and prizes which were separate from our many golf prizes.  This year was truly a great event from start to finish.

Vince would like to thank all that attended and next year our tournament will be on April 4th 2020.  Please mark your calendar. “

Attended by Jay & Judy Schack, Ron & Nancy Jacobson, Jerry & Janell Callaway, Tom & Mindy Lunn, Vince & Kathy Tranchita

2018 Homecoming October 20th, 2018

Grand Marshal for The 2018 UW-Whitewater Homecoming Parade, Phi Chi Epsilon’s own Rod Sonnenberg (Monroe, WI). Rod has helped his Alma Mater continuously over the last 50 years, is a member of The UWW Athletic Hall of Fame and on the University’s Foundation Board.

Taking part in 3, 2 man, best ball teams, at Willow Brook CC in Whitewater were L to R , Chuck Heinrich with teammate, former Chancellor Dick Telfer. Dave Cox with teammate Ed Gavigan (wearing a red sweater) Dale Poeppel with the Phi Chi cap and a smiling Paul Bockhorst (far right). Cloudy, a bit of wind but it remained dry for the 9 hole championship. Lots of great shots, super putts and a great way to start a Homecoming weekend. Hardly a comment was made of days long ago, yeah, right!

Breakfast with the Phi Chi Actives

Brother Heinrich got an invitation at the end of a Homecoming victory  over UW River Falls to come into the Warhawk locker room and be present for Coach Bullis’ comments to the team about the victory and the days ahead.  Thanks to long snapper #44 Mason Fleury for inviting him into the locker room.  What a way to end a cold, sunny afternoon at the Alma Mater. Go Warhawks!  Undefeated at 8-0.

Who Attended Golf Outing

Arizona Golf Outing- April 6th & 7th

What a great start to the weekend.  On Friday night, 20 plus Phi Chi's and their wives gathered at Carlo's O'Brian's Restaurant for margarita's and good Tex /Mex!  It's amazing how us old and happy people acted as if we were still in college.  First timers for our Friday gathering were Carl Sonnenberg, John Hyduke, Dennis Barker, Geno Harter, Mike Lederer, Tom Lunn and their wives. Let's not forget Ken Johnson who also attended and lent a hand in the excitement. We had a great time catching up on the past.

Saturday was very serious at the start. The day was sunny with a temperature of 95.  Wagers and who will win etc. set the stage for a great day of Golf!  We started at the putting contest which was approximately 60 feet in length.  The winner was Ron Jacobson who made the putt.  The second place winner was Neal Hansen.

After 18 holes of golf, the winning team was Dennis Barker, Ron Jacobson and Bill Sievers with a score of 59.   The Jim Beam team and the Callaway team tied for second place with a score of 61.  A "card hole" play off gave the second place Win to the Callaway team.  On the course we had 3 flag events for men and for woman.  Prizes were given out to the winners and we all settled down to an after golf buffet and cocktails.

Many thanks to all that participated in our events (Friday and Saturday), and a special thanks to Fred Ullrich for taking all the pictures for the event. Until next year ...

Ft Myers Winter Meeting Feb. 23rd thru 25th.

Post from Brother Chuck Heinrich:

A super time in Ft Myers. A great social gathering began on Friday evening at Miller's Ale House where there was no shortage of beer, food, laughs and conversations. Saturday started with an early gathering for breakfast prior to 18 holes of golf on a beautiful day, a surprise visit from the beer fairy on the 11th hole and a return visit to Stevie Tomato's for an awards ceremony that left Ron Bailey's mouth wide open, plus beverages, food and more fraternity singing and reminiscing. Four of us even traveled south to Naples, FL on Sunday for the annual UWW Chancellor's Brunch and gathering of all alumni where Phi Chi Epsilon made its presence noted with comments and presentations to football Coach Kevin Bullis and Director of Development, Katie Kuznacic. But most importantly, the work performed by Bob Schommer, Jerry Cimarosti, Ken Johnson and Ron Bailey to make this weekend special will be remembered for years to come. Thanks from all of us who attended. Great Job! And last but not least, it was learned that Homecoming 2018, will be on Saturday October 20, 2018. Nice fall weather is expected so plan to be in Whitewater and Perkins Stadium for another gathering of Phi Chi Epsilon.

Standing L to R: Dave Cox, Chuck Heinrich, Ken Johnson, Bob Schultz, Rod Sonnenburg.  Sitting L to R: Ron Bailey, Dennis Nitschke, Jerry Cimarosti, Bob Schommer.

PHI CHI DESERT CLASSIC, March 24th-March 26th

Back row, left to right: Gary Gemoll, Ken Johnson, Don Romeo, Ron Jacobson
Front Row: Vince Tranchita, Neil Hanson, Keith Edwards, Tom Higgins

The event started on Friday night at Carlos O'Briens. We had a private room on the patio some wait staff and Jay Schack singing (we are poor little Phi Chi’s who have lost our way), and spending time with old friends was fantastic. A lot of old stories were told and a few extra drinks, especially the bottle of tequila Dan Leonard purchased. Great stuff.

Saturday morning, we had 14 people for golf. The weather was 70 – 75 degrees which was just perfect. The results of the winners and losers. We played a Scramble, and the ladies won their division. They were relentless making birdies left and right and drinking shots almost every hole. The winning score for the men was 62 (Neil Hansen, Vince Tranchita, Ron Jacobson and Keith Edwards). The other scores were 63 from the Callaway team and 69 from the Essig team.

After golf and all prizes were given out, we had a buffet and 25 people showed. This was a wonderful rap-up for this great weekend. We had everyone saying they would come back next year. I have agreed to handle the event but to challenge the Florida team and Wisconsin Teams to consider a state challenge. Bring it on and put the best team you can together. I will wait to hear from you, start planning. Looking at the first week in April 2018.

Sunday UWW Chancellor Beverly Kopper and Emily Gruenewald hosted a wonderful brunch for approximately 30 UWW Alum.  Neil Hansen, Ken Johnson, Vince Tranchita and wife Kathy and Keith Edwards and wife Ginny, all UWW Alum represented the Phi Chi’s.  Then it happened, the WOW factor!  A couple sat with us that turned out was a Custer High school classmate of Neil Hansen, Todd McParland. As the conversation continued we realized that all three ladies in the group were members of the DZ Sorority, but slightly different era’s.

Winter Golf Outing Ft Myers (Feb 24th - Feb 26th)

MUST BE MY FEMININE SIDE!
TOO COLD IN WI AND TOO HOT IN FL!

The gathering was a bit leaner this year. Last minute issues with health, home and transportation kept a few of our usual participants away from Ft Meyers this year. It was even more apparent at the UWW Pelican Preserve Brunch on Sunday. Might it be the return of the crushing tourist business?

The Friday gathering at Sidelines Bar & Grill was short many of the couples that typically shared the evening. Gail Davis and Bonnie Merryfield were the lucky two gals that held our attention. An early date at the Club House on Saturday put us on the road back to our rooms at a reasonable hour.

Saturday morning we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at the Cross Creek Country Club and the many that didn’t participate on Friday rolled in for golf; we had enough golfers for 3 foursomes. There was sharing of sun block for those that hadn’t had the opportunity to gain their winter tan. Thanks to Bob Schommer for his effort in securing the space for Phi Chi at his home course and for all the handouts and prizes. We concluded the day at a new site, Tommy Tomato, where the awards for the least failure levels were distributed. Ron Bailey was forced to hand over the traveling trophy for the winning foursome to Bob Schommer. We all finished the day singing the oldie “To the tables down at Charlie’s”, surprisingly to the entertainment of the crowd! We had two first time golfers join the gang this year, Denny Gall and Brian Bradley. I had the pleasure of riding along as part of their foursome enjoying their stories from a different era.

Sunday found Ken Johnson, Donna Piorkowski and Dave Cox at the Pelican Preserve Brunch; typically we have 8 to 12 Phi Chis in attendance. But the overall attendance was low and there were many no shows for the reservations. It was a great program and brunch. Phi Chi, following our tradition, presented Chancellor Beverly Kopper with a “Thank You Napkin Holder”.

From all who attended the great alumni golf outing last Saturday in Ft. Myers, FL, special thanks to Bob Schommer for making lots of arrangements and doing the planning, Ken Johnson for ensuring the golf event and Friday and Saturday socials were perfect and Ron Bailey who has rallied the brothers over the years to attend events, where ever they might be held. You guys did great and the weather could not have been better! Thanks once more for a perfect chance to reconnect with other Phi Chis and btw, our singing chorus of 11 voices on Saturday afternoon was excellent as noted by other patrons who happened to be in the right place, (Stevie Tomato's Sports Bar) and, at the right time.
